For over 2 years Burundi is in a political crisis. The last elections for government were marred with irregularities and many Burundians reject the results. President Pierre Nkurunziza decided to ignore the open protest and to quell any resistance, civil or other, via his secret police and army. Many Burundians flee the country, but secretly. As the government wants the exodus to stop, they keep people from leaving, having them escape by night through forest and jungle routes. The international community first criticised the government, but soon fell into complacency. The refugee camps in Tanzania and neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo are gradually filling up with new arrivals.
